What are the basic types of coil slitting?

What is the coil slitting for?

Slitting is a common practice in the processing industry to produce material substrates for a variety of different market.

What equipment is used for coil slitting?

In order to accurately cut or slit thick rolls of substrate, a coil slitting line, such as KINGREAL Metal Coil Slitting Line is required.

These machines are used to unwind the parent roll, cut it to the appropriated width, and then rewind the final product into smaller, tightly wound rolls. To learn more about the various components of slitting systems, visit our slitting and winding product pages.

Coil slitting type

There are three basic types of coil slitting: razor slitting, shear slitting, and scoring slitting (also known as extrusion slitting). Each type can be distinguished by the type of blade, knife or equipment used for cutting. Deciding which system is best depends largely on the type of material being cut.

Razor slitting

Razor slitting involves razor blades(or possibly a series of razor blades) mounted on a coil slitting machine that cuts the material to the desired width as it passes through. Depending on where the shaver is positioned (i.e. top or bottom mounted), a slitter using this method can switch either slowly (top) or fast (bottom). The most economical of the three methods, razor cutting is best for converting very thin substrates such as films.

Cut strip

Shear cutting involves a two-part knife with a male end and a female end through which the substrate is passed and cut. This process is ideal for fast conversion and is ideal for precise conversion of various types of thin materials.

Score or smash cuts

Scoring or crush slitting involves the passage of a moving substrate between a solid rotating anvil and a circular rotary knife or series of knives called a crush slitter. This method is the most common of the three and is ideal for converting a range of different substrates of varying thickness and stiffness.
